Unmasked is literally the unmasking of former CSI and Detective Paul Holes. Holes gives us a glimpse into his frame of mind after spending years catching criminals. Honest and brutal, Holes weaves together the deterioration of his marriage with cases that stuck most with him along the way. While the book can sometimes jump around a bit from specific dates to larger date ranges, the overarching case tying the narratives together is the race to catch the Golden State Killer (through his second marriage) and the East Area Rapist (through his first marriage). Overall, I think the book is well done. It’s heartbreaking in that you can see the toll his work has taken on him, his relationships, and his view of reality. Holes exposes us to just how hard it is to keep the horrors compartmentalized when you’re faced with the evidence of what humans are really capable of.
