I had never expected a true crime story to be so personal and intimate as this one seems to be. It's fashioned more like a Raymond Chandler novel than a by-the-books procedural about hunting for killers in cold cases. The darkness associated with such a career in conveyed almost immediately, as the writing is crisp, clear and efficiently descriptive.
