It's hard not to be fascinated by true-crime stories, and it sounds like the author has a lot to tell about the dark side of "the American psyche," or at least the psyches of a subset of criminals. You also wonder about the lives and outlooks of the detectives and profilers who pursue criminals, and this book should tell that story.
