I got a copy of "How to Survive Your Murder" when it came out and I was hoping this next novel would live up to the author's previous work. And it does! This one is just as good if not better than her previous offering. Again, Valentine illustrates her reverent love for the horror genre, particularly the slasher, and she puts that love to good use as she weaves a tense story of murder, accusation, and secrets. I am dying (pun intended) to read more of this and see what happens. In a world where the 80s, 90s, and 2000s have become their own aesthetic and have been used to beat us over the head with nostalgia in various properties, Valentine has managed to find a unique angle on the summer camp serial killer trope and turn it into a masterful story. Not only does she tell a good horror story that isn't just a variation on the big man in a hockey mask theme, but she also deftly handles the topic of how a series of murders at an idyllic campground might actually affect the surrounding area and the people in it. She again has managed to tell a good scary story with twists without forgetting the humanity at the heart of it all. If she keeps putting out work like this she is sure to cement herself as a literary legend.
