This except laid out the background for a 16 year old triple murder. The doubts raised are a great start for solving the murders. I like the hints around possible connections and relationships which got me hooked. My only criticisms are 1) there were too many characters introduced towards the end of the excerpt - I couldn’t keep them straight but I’m sure that will even out as the story unfolds and 2) I’m not sure about the author’s research because Ellis Island wasn’t open 200 years ago - hopefully this misinformation will be corrected in the final printing.
