These opening chapters introduce us quickly to our main characters, set up the story admirably and whet the reader’s appetite with its initially grisly fare. It’s an 80s slasher teen movie flick reworked as a detective story. Lies have been told, murders have been committed and the wrong person may have been accused of heinous crime. All of this at a camp dwelling. Fun for the whole family!

The characters are crisply written, the dialogue is contemporary without being too exasperatingly slangy or repetitive (“weird” appears only seven times; “cool” or variations thereof only four). The mystery seizes the attention from the opening page. The action catches you with its frenetic speed. Even when the pacing eases up, the story continues to enthrall.

Who killed the people at Camp Lost Lake? Let’s find out.
