I am so glad Young Adult writer, Louisa Onome is from Canada! Hopefully the Canadian experience is better than an American one. She even went t oYork University! The main protagonist, Adanna Nkwachi, is 17 years old. She is the same age as my son. So I get the whole "I want to help, but I don't know how, and I also really want to get on with my own life." Her brother was supposed to go to school to become an engineer, but instead ran away and became a poet. Adanna reads his poetry and wonders why her life choices are less important than her family's life choices for her. She's got a lot on her plate for a 17 year old: parental pressures, looming debate competition, so-so love life, and her cousin's big wedding obligations. Quite honestly, I don't envy her. I wonder if her book would help my son figure things out. Louisa also wrote the popular book "Like Home."
