There's a lot of books out there that tackle this torn identity for immigrant children/ grandchildren, especially because the child feels in debt to the adult for everything they've done for them. What makes this book different seems to be this sibling relationship and even the art influences of the lead's passion. It makes the stakes even worse to have an older sibling who has failed previously in the eyes of one's parent, and I can't even imagine her feelings of pressure.
