I appreciate that the YA genre continues to grow and that the richness within BIPOC communities. True True starts with a vibrant celebration of the Afro-Latinx community in New York City before immersing the reader in Gil's transition to a new, wealthy, predominantly white, private school. The first impression already highlights some of the tensions that Gil faces within his family, friend group, new school/old school, extracurricular activities (martial arts and robotics), etc. I think many themes will resonate for a wide range of readers and could be enlightening for others. For me, the story seemed very similar to others without being as distinctive or immediately grabbing in voice, plot or character.
