True True expertly and eloquently tells the story of a young man’s experience with systemic racism and microaggressions in NYC. As a YA novel, it addresses issues teenagers face about fitting in, relationships, and finding a path forward. I enjoyed the author’s voice - from the propelling and descriptive narrating to skillfully highlight the juxtaposing cultures of a Caribbean Brooklyn neighborhood and the Upper West Side. From the first few chapters, it’s clear that Gil, the book’s protagonist, is smart and passionate. He knows when to keep his head down to be safe, but at what point does he need to speak out against injustice and how will he find his voice?
