I thought this was an interesting start to a book showcasing a major issue in American society. I was intrigued that Gil and his friends were Caribbean and thought the customs specific to Brooklyn were interesting too. These characters felt real without feeling preachy and I’m definitely interested to see how Gil would use lessons from The Art of War to fight the racism at his school.
