Totally Psychic is the story of Paloma Ferrer, tween and heir to a long line of psychic and predictive powers. Paloma's deepest wish is to impress her abuela enough to earn a spot on Abuela's annual and legendary psychic medium tour. However, Paloma finds herself in a new school in a new state with her newly activated powers. She's struggling with making new friends, learning how to properly use her powers, and how to find a way to get along with her mother and younger sister.

Paloma travels from Florida to California and learns a lot about herself, her family, and her powers in her new home. She faces all the problems the average tween would and then some with ghosts butting into her life left and right.

The writing is rich, and the story is fiercely original. I loved watching Paloma grow and learn to navigate the much more complicated waters of tween existence. She's a wonderful protagonist, and I flew through the pages of her story. I was biting my nails a couple of times, truly worried about what would happen next, but the story was told in a way that eased all my worries, and made me really invested.

The family dynamics are complicated, and I truly appreciate that. I do wish Paloma's mother was depicted a little differently. She read as SUCH a bad mother to me that I struggled with her decisions and overall character a lot... I wasn't rooting for reconciliation because Paloma's mom really needs to work on her parenting skills... like.. a lot.

But I thoroughly enjoyed this middle grade tale as an adult reader. I absolutely plan on recommending it to the middle grade readers in my life. It was warm, inviting, fun, and unique. It's a great concept and a worthwhile read.
