Brigid Martin’s middle grade novel Totally Psychic is a heartwarming story of a magical family. Paloma is a compelling main character. Finding herself leaving her home in Miami when she and her parents move to Los Angeles, the story explores friendship, grief, navigating big changes as a kid, and family ties. I loved how the psychic powers were portrayed, grounded and magical and part of a family inheritance. I also adored the relationship between Paloma and her grandmother. While the plot is predictable, it is fun. I imagine middle grade readers will find much to love in this book from ghost chickens to self discovery. The novel also does a nice job of handling grief which comes up through several of the readings Paloma provides. While my kids aren’t quite at the stage of being able to read this one independently, they are already drawn to the cover and description. A big thank you to BookishFirst and Inkyard Press for the gifted finished copy!
