"Totally Psychic" tells the story of Paloma, a tweenage girl who hopes to follow in her abuela's footsteps as a renowned psychic. When her mother makes the decision to move Paloma from Miami to Southern California in an attempt to escape her abuela's shadow, Paloma attempts to remain connected to her budding psychic identity while also making friends in her new home. However, her attempts to impress gets her in over her head, and our protagonist's attempts to get out of the mess she has created makes up the rest of the story.

I went into this expecting a cute middle-grade read, and that is exactly what I got. There isn't a whole lot of extra depth beyond some basic feel-good "family/friends are important" vibes, nor did I expect there to be anything more than that. There is a fair bit of suspension of disbelief involved (Paloma's mom deciding the best way to escape Abuela's celebrity status is to move closer to Hollywood, grown adults taking a twelve-year-old's word that she can see ghosts, etc.) that's fairly typical of this genre. If you are looking for a easy-breezy summer escape novel for the middle grade audience, "Totally Psychic" should be right up your alley.
