I don't regularly read middle grade books. It's not because they are simpler in vocabulary and plotting, which they are. I'm not overly interested in the younger set. Si why read some now? I have a grandniece and grandnephew coming up in school. They will be reading these books in short order, and I want to know what's available for them.
This is a charming tale. Paloma is part of a family of psychics, people who can talk to ghosts or determine what dreams mean, or find lost pets. Paloma has just turned 12 and have found out what her gift is. She can talk to ghosts, just like her grandmother. Her grandmother is famous for giving seances on tour in South America. Paloma wants to go on her grandmothers next tour, only Paloma's parents have moved their branch of the family from Miami to California.
Paloma is at a new school where nobody knows about her family or her psychic grandmother. She decides to start giving readings to her classmates. That has its good points and its bad ones. Pretty soon, she gets into trouble with ghosts and her mother by using a Ouija board to give a reading.
Things do work out, but it takes Paloma convincing her sister, who has also gotten her gift a little early since she's only 10, to help out.
This is a charming story, and when my grand children are old enough and can read, I'll be giving this book to them.
I won my copy of this book from the publisher through a website contest. I review all the books I read.
