Totally Psychic is a lively middle-grade book featuring a young tween, Paloma who is finding her way in a new school and learning to control her psychic powers. This book helped remind me of the beauty and charm of middle grade books!
Paloma is all about family. She and her family are gifted with psychic abilities and beyond. She is super close with her famous abuela and wants to be just like her. Her plan to join her grandma on tour is altered when her parents tell her they are all moving to Los Angeles. Paloma is not excited but will make the most of it.
She is determined to impress her grandma and comes up with the idea of Totally Psychic; a IG live show where she gives readings to classmates. With the help of her new friends, the show becomes a hit. But one birthday party caused a bit of ghost chaos. Paloma's grandma gave her a set of rules and she broke one of them. Now, she is surrounded by ghosts at school and needs to figure out a way to send them back and close the portal.
While this book is full of magic, the message of being true to yourself and helping others shines through. I really loved the family aspect of the story and how close Paloma is to everyone even if they don't always agree on things. It also hits home for tweens because they are constantly feeling pressure to fit in which could sometimes make you do things that are out of character. Overall, I think this is a fun, magical, and heartfelt read!
