The notion of an entire family blessed with unusual gifts is nothing new in fiction. (People used to think witchcraft was hereditary.) The Ferrer family isn’t persecuted, however. They’re celebrated for their psychic talents and Paloma Ferrer is delighted to be able to see spirits, just like her beloved abuela.

While Paloma fumbles a bit with her powers in the early chapters, what shines through is her unwavering love for her grandmother. Gloria Jimenez and her granddaughter get along excellently. It’s one of those special familial bonds where the elderly are thrilled to be able to share something with a younger member of the family.

Gloria Jimenez is a force to be reckoned with, one of those old women with steel underneath her sweetness. But that’s part of her appeal. She is happy to encourage Paloma’s gift but is quick to take her to task when an interruption nearly disrupts a psychic reading. While she chastises the young girl, she also explains why Paloma’s interpretation of a ghost’s mute signaling wasn’t something to be passed on to the client.

Gloria and Paloma are a truly wonderful pair. Like Paloma, you feel disheartened at their imminent parting. But you have the feeling that not even the distance of a continent would stop Mrs. Jimenez if she felt her granddaughter needed her.
