When I signed on to hopefully get a copy of this book for review, I really thought this was something special. I read the first look excerpt and was like “YAS I MUST READ THIS!”
As it started, I thought “oh, another story about trying to find/save a parent. Sooo hum drum.” But as I read more about the characters and the sinister being underlying it all I knew there was much more to this story. I ended up winning an ARC to review and I am so glad I did because I was among the first to read this terrifying horror-mance!
4 Very hard earned stars for Together We Rot by Skyla Arndt!
The main character, Wil, is on the search for her mother who disappeared about a year prior. She knows deep in her marrow that the town’s reigning church had something to do with her going missing, specifically the pastoral family, the Clarkes. This intuition cost her her best friend, Elwood Clarke, and she had to grieve a loss twice over, thrice given her father’s state of mind. Needless to say, Wil is having a rough go of things and the town sheriff is literally ZERO help.
The one silver lining for Wil is her new best friend, Ronnie, who she would go to battle for and vice versa. Including her on again off again boyfriend trouble. Said boyfriend happens to be the new best friend of you guessed it, none other than Elwood Clarke.
As the story progresses it turns out that almost all Wil’s fears are true and then some. She, Elwood and their friends end up not only having to outrun the evil brewing in the town but also come to terms with what is happening to Elwood. Is this thing within him good or evil? Will he survive it? And most of all will Elwood’s and Wil’s feelings transcend it?
This book was extremely well written and I absolutely love, love, LOVED it! If you like YA, horror and enemies-to-lovers second chance romance this is up your ally. My friends, I have found a new genre to live in, if you need me I’ll be over in horror-mance!
Thanks to BOOKish first and Viking Books for this lovely ARC of this most fantastically tragic story!
