I read the Eragon series as an adult after hearing so many rave reviews and it really worked for me, so I wanted to give the author's other work a try.

While I overall like the story, the writing didn't work for me and I couldn't finish the book. I put it down around 50% or so.
First contact is one of my favorite tropes but the book felt too long and the pace was a little clunky. I think that the author is definitely more strong when writing fantasy versus sci-fi. The length of the book is perplexing, as I really don't feel that it needed to be as long as it is to tell the story. The characters were all quite one-dimensional and fit to the same tired format of the "motley crew" where we have a bunch of differing personalities thrown together to fight for the greater good. The main protagonist seemed to cause more and more trouble than do good, and yet everyone was so enamored with her and what a great hero she is.

It just wasn't for me!
