I know this is one of the most anticipated sci-fi books of 2020, but I feel like it's based on the author's name and not the merits of this sample. I found it to be highly referential to other works of science fiction, particularly the Alien series (Weyland as a planet name, for example). The action takes a good while to get started, meaning the first few chapters are spent setting up characters who I didn't get much of an impression on. Kira felt very one-dimensional, and I did not get her desires or motivations. The rest of the characters were cardboard cutouts meant to surround her and give some context, but did not feel real. The action at the end of the sample picked up and began to start something interesting, but I don't know if I will end up reading the full book without reading more reviews. I wasn't a fan of Eragon and the writing is not drawing me in so far, so we'll see if I pick this book up or not.
