Let me start by saying I had very high expectations for this book after reading the Inheritance Cycle and I think that may have impacted my reaction to this story. This book is extremely different than that series and wasn’t quite what I expected. It took me months to complete as I continuously picked it up and put it down between other reads.

On a positive note, the world building is beyond detailed with complete histories, cultures, and solar systems. From a sci-fi standpoint it felt well researched and a lot of details based on scientific principles. If that’s what you love, I would recommend you try this book. The concept of the xenosuit was fascinating and I was hooked at the beginning when Kira first encountered it.

Unfortunately, after that point the pacing felt much too slow for me and I lost interest in the story until Kira met the Wallfish crew. They were absolutely the highlight of this book for me - particularly Trig and Gregorovich. I just wanted to know more about the entire crew and their adventures. The way they bound together like a family was great. Throughout the book, there were times that I felt a bit disconnected from Kira. I couldn’t quite place my finger on what it was that made her hard to connect with but I think it may have been partly due to so much of her time being spent alone and how she couldn’t get out of her own head. I wanted to be swept away by this book and sadly it just didn’t happen for me.
