I loved this book.

Yes, it is a big book, but don't let that discourage you from picking it up. Inside To Sleep in a Sea of Stars Christopher Paolini has crafted an incredible universe, full of a large cast of diverse characters, unique faith systems, incredible science and technology, multiple alien planets, and ALIENS! He does all this and somehow still makes the reader feel like they are in the center of it all. Yes, it is a big book, but you will devour it as he sucks you into this remarkable world and takes you on an epic adventure across galaxies.

All Kira thought she wanted in life was a job she was passionate about, a man she loved, and a desire to settle down and build a life for herself. While out investigating a site on a new planet, Kira stumbles across alien tech, and her life changes forever. The story shifts into high gear early on as hostile aliens appear shortly after the discovery an intergalactic war begins. This was not how humankind had hoped First Contact would go I'm sure.

Our protagonist, Kira Navarez, is strong and smart, but she is human and makes mistakes. Even when it becomes clear that she is humanity's best hope at defeating the coming darkness she maintains her humanity and her flaws and doesn't fall into the Mary Sue trope that is often found in sci-fi and fantasy stories.

Kira is a scientist and I loved watching her attack problems with her scientific mind, but also find points in the story where science couldn't provide the answer and she had to consider other perspectives. The relationships that she builds throughout the novel, with humans and aliens alike, were wonderful and real. As a reader, I felt personally invested in the well-being of each of these characters, and when Kira felt the loss of someone close to her my heart broke with hers.

I won't lie to you, there is A LOT going on in this book. There is a large cast of characters, lots of sub-plots and some potential triggers (non-consensual medical procedures, torture, some body horror, etc.) but it is an epic space opera, and worth the investment of your time.

I would like to thank BookishFirst and TOR for providing me with an advance copy of the book in exchange for an honest review, I am looking forward to the next installment to see where the story takes us until then I can't wait to check out the audiobook version of the book narrated by the legendary Jennifer Hale! (I must love it if I'm ready to dive in for a re-read already, right?) Pick up this book you won't be disappointed.
