An Aspiring Astrophysicist's Take
This is my first review on BookishFirst, and I'm hitting myself for not signing up in time to enter the giveaway for this book.
For context, I'm a few days from 18, fascinated by space and physics, about to head into my dream school. I'm writing this while I attend a Zoom talk on cosmic microwave background radiation. I feel like it's needless to say that I really, really enjoyed this excerpt.
First, the science - I'm not the most well-versed in fields explored such as geology, but I have some amateur learnings in planetary geology and physics as well as astrobiology (my only complaint -- that's the more modern term for the field, as exobiology has been out for a while). The routine nature of the scientific exploration on the planets reminds me of my stays with NASA personnel during internship intensives and slack-jawed interviews. It's magical to explore.
Thus, we're brought to the chemistry. Though interpersonal romance is... discouraged in a mission format, the chemistry between Kira and Alan is so sweet, so nerdy, and a welcome step-up from my experience with YA couples. The team dynamics presented are lovely as well, and I find myself craving cinnamon rolls.
All this brings us to the suspense - I have absolutely no idea what's going on. Will this be like Venom? Alien? Who knows - I do know, though, that I'll soon be finding out.
