Thank you to Bookishfirst and Tor books for a gifted copy of this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I actually rated this book 3.5 stars. *Spoilers ahead*

This was a huge monster of a book. Did I like it? Yes. Did I love it? Eh. Did I think a bunch of it could have been cut out so that it was shorter? 100%

The world building and descriptions were done really well. I could clearly picture all of the planets, the ships, the people, the aliens, everything, it was incredible! Plus, all of the science and technology aspects were amazing, and you could tell a lot of research went into all of it!

The action was great, and there was so much of it even within the first 100 pages! It was fast paced and exciting! Most of the books I’ve read recently start slow and build up to the main events, but this one started with a bang and kept on going.

The MC, Kira, was alright. She wasn’t my favorite, but I liked her enough. She was curious and brave, and just a little bit annoying at times. She asked too many questions and was so nosy (and that may be a little too much like me 😂 but I digress), but then again I feel like she had the right to be. If I had an alien life form stuck to me, I would definitely be pushy and ask a million questions too!

I was a fan of the found family trope and I really liked the crew of the Wallfish (ugh Falconi 😍) and how well Kira got to know each of the side characters. They all had backgrounds and personalities and I cared about them. I enjoyed learning each of their stories and why they each ended up on the crew.

Now let me talk about my favorite part of this book, Captain Falconi, my newest book boyfriend. At the beginning I wasn’t sure how I felt about him and then he just kept getting better and better (Please get rid of Alan). He may come off as hard and serious, but the way that he cares about his crew and Kira is just the best 😍 and he has a background and a story and incredible character growth and hands down he is amazing 🙌🏼 He was by far my favorite part of this whole book!

Let’s talk about the things that could have been left out. First of all, get. rid. of. Alan. He was absolutely not necessary to any part of this. I don’t even care about him. Yes he was nice, yes it was sweet that they were going to get married, no I still don’t care (Team Falconi all day!). Get him out of this book! Second there was a weird section about her getting her periods back that was completely unnecessary. Maybe if whatever she hinted about doing in college was fully explained it would have made more sense, but since we never actually get that story, this can just go away. Third, what happened to the UMCI officers that she saved from Adrasteia right after the Extenuating Circumstances exploded? They go into cryo and then we never hear from them again. Why did we save them? Fourth, we can get rid of some of the 100 pages of her being in space by herself while everyone else is in cryo 🤷🏻‍♀️ Then I’m pretty sure we just cut this book down to a much more manageable size of 550 pages, if not less..I’m just saying.

Lastly, I was not a fan of the ending, though I’m pretty sure it set up for a second book. Did the ending make sense? Yeah, I guess. But It was not even a little bit like what I expected and it was 0% what I had hoped for, and to be honest, it was weird.

Overall it was good and there was a ton of action starting from the very beginning, but it could have been shorter.
