I was an Eragon fan growing up. That series holds a special place in my childhood and I hadn't seen this author's name in NINE years. When I did, I was hit with a wave of nostalgia. What was interesting though was that this was going to be a whole other genre of books, which I'm also a fan of. This story is set in the greater space setting and first contact is made. Paolini doesn't bring anything entirely new to scifi, but he really really does it well (which is all I really want from scifi now because original ideas are great, but well executed ideas are rare). The concepts aren't anything new but the story is new done and it's done WELL. This is a plot-driven story. I don't dislike the characters but because this is a scifi book focusing on this world, you're going to see more focus on the plot and world-building. I did have a bit of issue with the pacing. Some points it was really fast and others it was INCREDIBLY slow. It jumps around and keeps you on your toes. The way it ends at the end you're either going to love or hate though. I think the best part for me was the world-building. For the most part, I enjoyed it and I can't wait to see what Paolini comes out with next.
