Just going to start off saying that I was blown away by this first look. I can't wait for this book to be released so I can know how Kira's story continues! The first several pages are a little slow giving you a more "every day" look into the lives of the crew. The story starts out with the crew celebrating their last night together on a planet that has been deemed fit for colonizing. Change is in the air and our main character Kira is reluctant to leave behind the people who have become her family, in particular her boyfriend, Alan. But their last morning on the planet, Kira is sent to investigate an area where a survey drone went down and organic matter was detected. Paolini brilliantly sets up the world-building (or in this case universe-building?) in a realistic and believable way. There were a few things I questioned, but overall it seems everything was pretty well-researched. This first look quickly builds momentum and left me needing to know what happens next.
