Threads That Bind by Kika Hatzopoulou is a perfect combination of fantasy, romance, and murder mystery, and an excellent beginning to a new series! The plot centers around Io, a “cutter,” who possesses the ability to see and sever ties between people and the things they love, including their connection to life itself. Io uses her power to make a living as a private investigator, mainly by investigating whether her client’s partners are being unfaithful. While working on one such case, Io witnesses a murder committed by a wraith – a woman whose life-thread has been severed, an impossible occurrence. The woman claims to have been sent by someone to deliver justice.

“There are crimes,” the old woman said, removed as if in a trance, “that cannot go unpunished. I will rise from the ashes a daughter of flame.”

As the string of murders continues, Io takes it upon herself to investigate who is behind them and, more importantly, their motive, as it becomes apparent that these killings are not occurring at random. In her quest, she teams up with Edei Rhuna, her soulmate who is connected to her by a fate-thread. Io decides to keep this information from Edei, uncertain about how he would react if he were to find out that their destiny was already predetermined.

The world-building in this book is impressive! The three moons, neo-monsoon rains, smog-filled murky streets, and flickering neon signs – the author has created a vivid and highly detailed post-apocalyptic world. There’s a lot of work and creativity put into crafting this mesmerizing, yet dark and complex world.

The chemistry between Io and Edei is palpable, and the fact that Io is the only one that is aware of the fate-thread added an additional layer of excitement to the story. Even though Edei doesn’t know about the fate-thread, he can’t help but feel increasingly drawn to Io with each passing moment they share together.

The book seamlessly waves (weaving the threads, get it?) in Greek mythology, as well as elements from other mythologies from around the world, such as Horus – the Egyptian god of war and sky, and Chernobog – the Slavic god of evil and darkness. The author’s creativity and attention to detail are evident in the description of The Quilt, and it made me wonder how many threads moira-born would be able to see emanating from me or loved ones. Which of those threads would shine the brightest?

The ending caught me off guard, and it left me with even more questions! I am eagerly looking forward to the next book in the series. I highly recommend this thrilling book to anyone who enjoys both fantasy and murder mystery!

The cover is absolutely stunning, and the complementary color scheme really brings out the power of the moira-born!
