“Let’s burn it all down.”

Are Pretty Little Liars, Gossip Girl, or HTGAWM your jam? Then come on in, join the fun, add this book to your TBR everyone.

They Wish They Were Us follows Jill and her group of friends known as “The Players” around their senior year at the prestigious Gold Coast Prep in Long Island. They are rich, they are privileged, and they are the elite.

3 years ago, during an initiation type dare (known as a pop) Shaila is murdered. The murderer? It’s always the boyfriend! Graham Calloway even confessed to the police. However, now, Graham and his sister Rachel are convinced he didn’t do it, and set off to find the truth to set him free before he goes to a real jail at 18. (Rich people things, ya know? You murder someone, but get to go to a fancy juvie that is basically a summer camp). Rachel pleads to have Jill help in the investigation, and Jill starts to realize that all that glitters is not gold.

I really enjoyed how they set the tone for who The Players were. They explained the sacrifices and the horrible pops they had to do to join this elite group, and I liked how there was a significant amount of time being spent on this background. It made you realize just how much of their morals had already been compromised, and how they would do anything to be accepted, including covering up a murder.

The last 1/4 of the book is where most of the investigation/mystery/Nancy Drewing happens. I also feel like I really got to see the characters mature and grow in this last 1/4, and it was such a nice thing to notice. The killer is kind of obvious, but there are a few red herrings hidden. Also, it’s more about the hazing and elite status than it is about the murder, which I throughly enjoyed.

I did see that there is a “The Players Table #2” so I am very excited to see what direction this will go. Thank you so much Libro.fm, Razorbill, Penguin Audio, & Jessica Goodman for this advanced listening copy. This one is out 08.04.2020!
