Jill Newman is going to have the best senior year. She finally a top player (a secret society at her exclusive prep school), and she makes rules. Jill and her friends have been through a lot. Their friend was murdered at a party they all attended freshman year. The boyfriend did it. Or did he? When Jill receives texts claiming the boyfriends innocence she can’t let it go. She has to find out what really happened to her best friend.

Ah privileged teens being mean to one another, will I ever tire of you? No, probably not. The not-so-secret society in this one is so much fun. The hazing, the cheating, the partying, it is all the things you expect/want from a mean teen drama. They Wish They Were Us takes it up a notch with the exclusive prep school angle. Teens can really get up to some antics when their parents are too busy and influential to take the time to parent.

Jill is likeable in a way most mean girls aren’t. She wants to make changes, and stands up for what she believes in. She also eats raw cookie dough (the safe kind), which I really respect. Some of her choices made me want to scream into the night, which is way I vow to never procreate.

I ended up really enjoying this book. The who-dun-it portion was very obvious to me. Being a YA, I’m letting it slide a bit. I waffled a bit on my rating, but given time it’s a solid 4/5. If you like Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars, but wish there was a solid murder mystery....pick up They Wish They Were Us.
