A fun mystery read with a slow build
They Wish They Were Us was a fun mystery read set in Long Island. It's perfect for fans of Pretty Little Liars or Gossip Girl. The book took a bit of time to get going and once it did, it still had a slower paced mystery with a quiet build. If you're looking for a fast-paced thriller, this probably isn't the book for you, but if you like slower books with twisty plots like We Were Liars, you won't want to miss They Wish They Were Us!
Without giving anything away, I do want to say that the plot & mystery were not the most original and I found it to be a little predictable--I'd (correctly) guessed the real murderer within the first couple of chapters. Teen readers who are newer to the mystery genre will likely still enjoy this one, but seasoned mystery/thriller readers might not.
One thing I did love was the Jewish representation! That's always exciting to see, especially for me as a Jewish reader.
Overall, not my favorite YA mystery but one that I'll still recommend!
