From the first pages, readers get embroiled in the murder mystery of Shaila Arnold, queen bee and Jill's best friend. 3 years have passed and Jill starts senior year, ready to rule the school as part of the Players group. While the first chapters don't concretely explain what this clique is and does, but it's inferred that it's the elite secret society of Gold Coast Prep. While she and her peers think they know who killed Shaila, a text message sends Jill spiraling with the revelation that the accused was innocent.
The first four chapters have everything you could ask for in a prep school mystery - super rich kids, a love triangle, popularity contests, and college admissions anxiety. Jill sometimes fills out of place with her peers as she's a scholarship student. She loves what being part of the Players gives her: access, status, a hot boyfriend, and academic support but struggles with their actions and if it's safe for her younger brother to join.
The character dynamics are fascinating and Goodman does a great job fleshing out their personalities in just a few pages. I'm really excited to read this book. Additionally, the cover completely drew me in (I love black watch plaid) and I'm thrilled to see that the first pages match the cover!
