I read a lot of mystery books. Out of the 30+ books I’ve read so far for the year, 17 of them have been mysteries. So, I’ve gotten pretty good at guessing who the “bad guy” is. I was pleasantly surprised that I could not guess who the “bad guy” was in “They’ll never catch us.” I was consistently going back and forth in my head as to who hurt Mila. Was it the allegedly violent sister who would do anything for a cross country scholarship? Or the kinder, more sociable sister who has a deep secret? Could it even be a secondary character- like the cross country coach or the town mean girl? What I love about books like this, is that you don’t know the answers until the final pages, so it keeps you reading non-stop to figure out what happened.

On the surface, this book is a really great mystery. But, there is a lot more involved than the mystery. At the core, this book is about a broken relationship between sisters, in a broken family, in a broken town. This book touches on a lot of deep topics including: substance abuse and alcoholism, financial privilege, sexuality, and strained relationships between family.

All in all, I think this was a fantastic book. It had an amazing plot with a suspenseful mystery but incorporated a lot of deeper topics as well.
