Meet sisters Stella and Ellie. Both are on the track team, and both have goals for college. Stella's are more ambitious, especially because an incident last year has marked her as aggressive. It doesn't help that she's prickly towards her team members. She's a loner who doesn't let people in. Ellie is more outgoing, makes friends easily, and misses the bond she had with Stella. But when Mila goes missing, everyone must pull together to find her. Hopefully, the unsolved serial killer of the past hasn't resurfaced.
Stella is definitely a tough character to like. It's because she has nothing redeeming about her personality, at least at first. But you don't have to love all the characters in a book to love the book. The plot doesn't wholly center on the murders of the past or Mila's disappearance. It's an easy mix, adding Stella and Ellie's struggles with great character development. They'll Never Catch Us is a slow-revealing mystery/thriller in how Goodman unfolds the story.
