So, I thought this was a fairly fun read! My rating would probably be around a 3.5, but let's round up for now. I'm going to start with my few complaints so that I can end on some positive notes.

Cons:

I have two main complaints about this book: very little magic (especially from our main character) and I wasn't a big fan of some of the dialogue. From the get go, this book was pitched as Knives Out with magic, and I was pretty much along for the ride with my seatbelt secured, but golly what's the point of having the main character the uber-skilled apprentice to one of the world's biggest sorcerer and only have her do magic 3 times (only one being successful). It made it hard to believe the hype around her.

Less of a complaint, every character had the ability to come up with the perfect zinger responses during conversations which sometimes made the different characters feel too similar to other characters. Not everyone is or should be capable of amazing comebacks at every opportunity and that is okay!

Besides these thoughts, I really did enjoy this book. It felt light and easy to get through. Tabitha drives the story pretty decently, and I didn't mind the small future Tabitha interjections. I thought that most of the main characters were well-rounded (dialogue aside) and I can't say that I completely guessed the ending which is very important for a good mystery.

I also thought that the romance was cute. I got a small bout of butterflies which is impressive considering that it really is a small portion of the book. It was refreshing for a teen book to truly treat romance as the secondary story instead of having the book be a romance with a dash of murder/action.

Overall, a nice quick read that I think most people would not regret picking up!
