The writing is okay, though there's a lot of exposition that I wish was broken up more. The main character narrating and explaining everything got a little long-winded. I did like Knives Out but only getting the vaguest impression of the comparison. Magic and mystery are interesting but also don't seem like anything new, especially for YA.
