My first impression is that this book is very different than Cashore's Graceling Realm series, but not necessarily out of her wheelhouse since it does seem more similar to Jane, Unlimited. So yes it's weird, but not necessarily in a bad way. More toward the end of the sample, I was getting more intrigued and grounded.

The cover is amazing, and it too reminds me of her other contemporary which was a sort of choose your own adventure. The maze imagery makes me think of different pathways (or in this case probably doorways) into other worlds or realities.

I want to keep reading because like I mentioned, toward the end of the sample I was starting to get hooked. There are so many unusual character dynamics in play with these aunts and estranged friends and now a random classmate, and other small characters even just barely introduced in her snowy town. That and of course the timing, set during the height of the pandemic. I think I am one of those people who find comfort in stories set in 2020, reading them now, because while it was terrifying, it was also when people showed up most for each other and the world became smaller and bigger at the same time. Anyway, I am excited to see where this goes.
