The Wrong Kind of Weird by James Ramos is a Young Adult novel set in the crazy jungle known as high school. Cameron “Cam” Carson has a secret. A big secret. Cam has been hooking up with Karla Ortega, student council president, cheerleader, theater enthusiast and queen bee of the popular group known as the Caravan. As a member of the Geeks and Nerds United (GANU) club with his friends, D’Anthony and Jocelyn, Cam isn’t supposed to mix with anyone from the Caravan. Cam and Karla met while working together at a local coffee shop and meant only to have a summer fling. That fling turned into a senior year entangled that left Cam confused. Enter Mackenzie Briggs. A fellow nerd who isn’t afraid to be herself, Cam finds himself bonding with Mackenzie and deepening his confusion about Karla. Cam must discover the truth about who he can truly consider a friend and who might be potentially more.
The Wrong Kind of Weird is a high school rom-com that shines a light on the perceptions we may have of those around us. And reminds us that there’s more to what we see, as Karla says at one point, “Everyone’s weird. This book had all the players of a high school hierarchy and sets out to show that everyone has their issues, some were lucky enough to be on the right side of the invisible weird line. Cam realizes that he is on the wrong side of that line and readers will ask the question “what constitutes being on the wrong kind of weird?” I appreciate the love given by the author to anime and all things geekdom. There were a few eye rolling moments and whispered “oh geez!” However, I thoroughly enjoyed Cam and his story and closed the book with a smile. These kids are going to be okay. I recommend The Wrong Kind of Weird.
