The Wrong Kind of Weird is a definite throwback to high school days. Which means that it’s perfect for readers that are actually in high school or are feeling nostalgic. What I mean by this is that there isn’t any fantasy element to it, and there isn’t some soulmate love story at the center of the book. It’s just about fitting in, figuring out who you are, what you do and don’t tell your friends, and trying to do things to seek approval from the right people. I felt like a nerd in my own way in high school, but it definitely wasn’t the same way as Cam and his friends in GANU. For readers that aren’t familiar or interested in things like anime and manga, a lot of the references can go straight over their head (they did for me with the exception of Mario Kart), but the passion is something that exists for most teenagers, and quite frankly for most people at any age. The reader will definitely want to give Cam a good solid shaking for chasing after a girl that only wants to hook up with him in secret, but Ramos does a great job of ending this storyline on a positive note. It was almost too much like revisiting high school for me, as someone well past it; but would be perfect for an actual high schooler. As a completely separate note, I have an issue with Karla essentially being illustrated as a blond white girl on the cover illustration, when Ramos describes her as having dark hair and not being white, which is a reminder that whoever is doing illustrations needs context from the book for portrayals to be accurate. A complimentary copy of this book was provided by the publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
