It’s a good thing this book was short, because I don’t think I could hold all of that anxiety in my chest any longer. Stephanie Perkins is a talented horror and suspense writer, striking all the perfect notes to guide you from feeling creeped out to a racing, terrified heart. I didn’t know what danger would be meeting them in the woods, and I’m glad I went in knowing little, because what they Neena and Josie ended up facing is one of my worst fears about camping.

I also really enjoyed Neena and Josie. Both were imperfect but so real, and even their conflict felt authentic, if sometimes frustrating. The social issues confronted by this book were also so great to see represented, even when it was horrifying.

This would have been a 5-star book if not for the rushed ending. This really could have used another 50 pages, or even an epilogue, to wrap up loose ends and give greater weight to the final events of the book. I also think more pages would have been great to unpack some of the social issues confronted in the story. That said, I still appreciate how it ended, and I’m impressed with how Perkins was able to satisfyingly give closure to so much in so little time.
