I had both the audiobook and physical copies of this book, but listened to the majority of it on audio. The narrator did an excellent job and helped elevate the creepiness in this atmospheric story.

This has a very slow pace for the first 40% of the book before the action speeds up. It’s an easy storyline to follow and definitely does a great job of bringing the atmosphere of the Appellation Mountains hiking trails. I liked that the characters had diverse backgrounds and families. What felt weird to me is that they didn’t feel like they are really best friends, more like sisters who hate each other and are forced to spend time together. It felt like much of the first half was lot of it was just the girls arguing, whining, pouting, whining, yelling, and did I mention whining? When things began to pick up I switched back to the audio for the creepy vibes. You have to be willing to fully suspend belief for much of what happens throughout the book without getting into any details to avoid spoilers. I do feel like perhaps this was one of the few times I wanted a thriller to be longer than it is - with additional pages the villains could have been fully fleshed out to better understand who they are, where they came from, what they do etc. This is one that I do think younger adult readers will find more suspenseful and makes for a quick read or listen. 3/5⭐️
