I loved the synopsis of this book and was so excited to read it, but it just fell flat for me. The characters are annoying and basically argue and try to make things harder for each other through the first third of the book. It makes me wonder why they have been best friends for so long since they obviously hold a lot of resentment towards the other. Neena is apparently selfish because she has a good family life, and Josie is scared of everything because her father died when she was young and her mom is a train wreck. And then it takes a random turn and they are all of a sudden being hunted by two creepy men.
It just seemed to take a long time to get anywhere and then it was a bit far fetched. Not only are there other dead bodies they find along the way, Josie has a body part shot off, another body part barely hanging on and yet she manages to escape. Then in the end they are saved by an attacking bear, which Josie has been afraid of happening the entire book, and then it just ends. You never find out if their attackers are actually dead, if Josie loses her body parts, if the police find all the other dead bodies and the other families get closure. I hate when books don't actually complete the story.
And the worst part of the entire book was the random interjections that all men are disgusting and out to get them. That there are no decent men besides their own brothers or fathers or uncles and everyone else obviously wants to take advantage of, kidnap, or make their lives worse. It was ridiculous. I don't know if the author has some deep seated hatred towards men or if she just thought it was a good idea for a book about teenagers fresh out of high school should be wary of every single male they encounter but it annoyed me through the entire book.
