The beginning of this novel paves the way for a very creepy premise. Two inexperienced campers who arebest friends set out into the woods for a camping trip before one goes across the country for college and the other stays in Asheville. I live in Asheville so I was super excited to see that this is where it takes place. This book is already setting up the suspense within the first few pages. The girls run into a couple and the boy tells them a story about something lurking in the woods are the campsite they are staying at. We find out that he is joking (or is he?) but it adds to the creep factor making me think of all the urban legends that have been born in the woods. The girls are already fearful of bears (I know this fear all too well) but the story puts them on edge. They soon find out that they are way behind schedule and are worried they won’t have camp set up my dark. This excerpt ends with them not sure where to go to find their campsite.
