After reading this first impression, I would have preferred the author choose a different point in the story to begin the actual book. There is lots of backstory in the beginning and boring stuff about trying to get everyone on board about hiking and camping. And it's also very difficult for me to believe two high school graduates who have never trained or ever went backpacking would even try this.
