The book’s cover suggests something going wrong. I was not sure what the evil or scary situation might be, but the first 40 pages suggest that it is the friendship of high school senior gal pals,Neena Chandrasekhar and Josie Gordon. These two Walmart employees who are disdainful about their place of employment. There is a moment of light-hearted humor with the description of their store’s pathetic book section. But as quickly as that humor appears, it disappears. Back to what is clearly a dissolving friendship.

I was slightly surprised by two things early in the book: first, a joke between the two girls about cannibalism if Josie is too weak to survive their self-imposed, three-day hike/backpack camping trip; second, the fact that they “hated everybody” except themselves. Hate? It seems like an awfully strong word, and nothing in the preview pages supported a basis for hating humanity.

I am not sure how I feel about this book because the relationship of Neena and Josie simply does not feel convincing to me. Three times in the first 37 pages there is a reference to their matching lapis lazuli friendship rings, so reader is probably assuming that a ring or rings will eventually be a clue in some crime or disaster. Josie’s ring is getting too tight on her swollen fingers while the friendship is rapidly losing its tightness. Jeez, the girls are even arguing about whether or not their little cairns are a violation of the “leave no trace” policy for nature. I am somewhat curious about where this plot is headed, but I am pretty sure one girl is going to go missing and another will be blamed.
