The Woman Inside is a gripping thriller told through the perspectives of three complex and flawed characters whose lives collide in unexpected ways. Karla Larsson, a law student and housekeeper for Steven and Regina Rytters, a wealthy couple, becomes increasingly suspicious of her employer's behavior. Is Steven just concerned for his wife’s well-being, or is there something else going on behind closed doors? Meanwhile, Bill Olsson, a widowed father, is forced to confront his suppressed emotions when he stumbles upon a photo of Jennica, his late wife’s former friend. Jennica Jungstedt, a failing student and so-called “psychic adviser,” sees her new relationship with Steven as a way to silence her never-satisfied family once and for all. However, when Lund's perfect couple is found dead in their mansion, her plan fails. The question is, who is responsible?
This slow-burn thriller features multiple POVs and gradual revelations of the characters' deepest secrets and struggles. The mystery is gradually uncovered through police reports, interrogation excerpts, and newspaper articles. Each of the three main characters is complex and flawed, and their imperfections affect their relationships with others (and themselves). However, at times, the voices of the three main characters seem to blend into one person. Then again, this shared dark and monotone voice perfectly fits the overall atmosphere of the story. The mystery kept me guessing until the end, and while the ending wasn't overly shocking, it was clever and unexpected. I loved this Nordic-noir mystery thriller and look forward to reading more of M.T. Edvardsson’s work in the future!
I like the cover – it’s simple yet impactful and fits the story well! I like the addition of a silhouette in the window, which hints at the darker aspects of the story.
