This memoir gave me a glimpse of a type of life I had often been curious about but never would have been able to experience in any other way. Simone and I are similar enough in our world views that her story felt like it mirrored what my own reaction would have been in her shoes. She writes about being a fish out of water in the company of the other wives of the Unit and her reservations about military life but she never shies away from portraying the strength, sacrifice, and intense bonds that these women share. What military wives are expected to do in order to support the careers of their loved ones is just incredible and the amount of fear and stress they experience when their partners are deployed is unimaginable. I appreciated the raw examination of her feelings and her struggles within her own marriage. Some of the conversations with her husband were so difficult to read because you could tell how much they truly love each other while both having such intense emotions and experiences. This was such a compelling read and one I was so happy to be given a chance to read in exchange for an honest review.
