It was a privilege to get a glimpse into the lives of the wives of special forces soldiers. Simone Gorrindo depicted well for the reader the loneliness, fear, upheaval, and anger felt by these women whose husbands were deployed to Afghanistan for weeks and sometimes months at a time. The wives were left to take care of anything at home that came up with children, the house, car repairs, pregnancy issues, etc. The women learned to rely upon each other for support.

The men seemed to relish their time with their buddies and many looked forward to going into combat. Their experiences in combat couldn’t help but change them somewhat. They came back from their missions at times with aggressive behavior and language more befitting a locker room.

Simone and her husband Andrew had to work at their marriage and even sought counseling to improve communication with each other. They loved each other, wanted to better understand each other, and most of all, make their marriage succeed.

Readers will appreciate how open and honest Ms. Gorrindo is about trying to build a life around the constancy of war. It was difficult for the soldiers and wives both. The men needed strong support from each other, wives needed to form their own support groups, and the spouses certainly needed to find ways to keep in good communication with one another. This is an eye opening book for many of us to some of the struggles taking place. I feel gratitude and admiration for our service men and their wives.
