Full transparency, starting with the fact that this book isn’t a genre I’d usually come across and be interested in. That being said, I’m immensely delighted that I had the opportunity to read such a book. Simone Gorrindo had a story to tell and that story was her very own, from her experiences to her emotions and struggles. It’s beautifully written and I think is well deserved in terms of being shared amongst the book community.
We follow Gorrindo’s experience being a military wife. Throughout the story, she shares her ethics and morals, as well as the challenges she faces when she comes across those who have differing opinions than that of her own. Born and raised in California and beginning a dream life in New York with a wonderful career, she leaves all of that behind to accompany her husband who is stationed in Columbus, Georgia. Befriending other military wives and adjusting to this new life, it’s intriguing to hear a story from someone with such a different background than my own.
I wasn’t too sure how I’d like this book, if I’m honest. I’m always looking forward to the experience of new books or genres because I like to maintain an open mindset about literature. I’m born and raised in Georgia, also known as the south. I’m used to the people and culture here with no questions or thoughts about it, as it’s been a part of who I am and how I have lived my entire life. Gorrindo experiences somewhat of a culture shock. There were many parts of the book that made me laugh and I enjoyed her humor. It made me reflect on how people are different based on their backgrounds, and how it’s always awkward feeling like an outsider.
Nonetheless, there isn’t one “crowd” of book lovers that I can recommend this book to. It’s a memoir of someone’s experiences with mentions of love, struggles, politics, adjustment, and personal thoughts. Her writing style easily pulls you in and allows you to navigate smoothly through the chapters. I’d simply say, give it a shot. Especially for those women who have maybe experienced something similar in their lives.
