I should preface this review by first saying that this is not my typical genre and I am most likely not the target audience for this book, though I was intrigued by the synopsis. While reading the first look we were given, I found myself struggling to get into the story. The synopsis gave me the impression that we would be focusing mostly on Simone and the other military wives as they go through life while their husbands are deployed, however the majority of the first look we were given focuses on Simone's husband, his desires to join the army, the state of the war in Afghanistan at the time, and general background information/setup. It felt like we spent more time looking into the past rather than speaking on the present, though maybe that is the intention.

I struggled to stay interested in the story and found the amount of background information and plot-setup to be somewhat jarring, very much preferring to focus on Simone and the other wives' lives after their husbands are deployed. By the end of the first look, after their husbands leave to be deployed on their missions, I was definitely interested to see how the rest of the story would play out, however, I feel that it took far too much setup to get to that point.

Otherwise, this first look was very well written and informative on a subject that I have little experience with myself and would be a very enjoyable read for someone who prefers memoirs. Like I said, I am most likely not the intended audience!
