I would like to call this very exciting novel a "page turner" but I can't. I found myself savoring every page, and lingering to make sure I hadn't missed any nuance. This is not an easy read, but well worth the concentration it takes to understand the history, motivations and actions of the characters. I am usually quick to discover any fore shadowing, but I was astonished to discover the Nellie-Vanessa connection and the identity of Emma.
The minor characters were well established, especially Sam and Maureen, who have major roles in moving the plot along without seeming to intrude.
The author takes the reader on a thrilling ride with many detours along the way. We're not sure where we're going, but it is a fascinating trip.
